Palaniappan

Palaniappan later pursued advanced lithography at the Tamarind Institute in the United States (1991) and served as an artist-in-residence at Oxford University (1996). K. Muralidharan

K. Muralidharan (born 1954) is an acclaimed contemporary Indian modernist painter and printmaker recognized for his vibrant visual narratives, childlike mythological figures, and poetic surrealism. C. Douglas

C. S. Hari

S. Thota Tharani

Thota Tharani (born 1949) is a legendary Indian artist, production designer, and art director celebrated for his versatile mastery across fine arts, architectural set design, and graphic printmaking. Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, he was raised in an environment immersed in set decoration through his father, Thota Venkateswara Rao, a veteran set designer. K. V. Haridasan

V. Viswanadhan

V. M. Senathipathi

M. Senathipathi developed a signature visual language that merges Hindu mythic archetypes—such as Lord Krishna, Ganesha, and divine couples—with contemporary human emotions of love, longing, and insecurity. J. Sultan Ali

J. S. Nandagopal

S. Nandagopal (1946–2017) was a distinguished Indian sculptor, painter, and craftsman recognized for his groundbreaking frontal metal sculptures that fused traditional Indian narrative arts with modernist spatial concepts. Born in Bengaluru, he was the son of the legendary artist K.C.S. Paniker. He pursued a degree in Physics at Loyola College, Chennai, before following his artistic passion by completing his Diploma in Fine Arts (Sculpture) at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras, in 1971. Nandagopal pioneered a signature technique of using beaten sheet metal—primarily copper and brass—welded together into two-dimensional, free-standing frontal structures, often finished with silver plating, enamel, and intricate surface chasing. His imagery drew deeply from Indian mythology, heroic legends, sacred architecture, and local folk motifs, creating dynamic heraldic icons (Hero Stones, Deity, Garuda, Chariot) that read like linear metal paintings in space. Tragically, he passed away suddenly in 2017 while working at his studio in Cholamandal. As a prominent second-generation figure of the Madras Art Movement, Nandagopal played a crucial role in extending the movement’s philosophy into three-dimensional forms. Having lived at the Cholamandal Artists' Village from its inception in 1966, he grew up surrounded by the movement’s key debates and eventually served as a guiding steward for the village, managing its open-air museum and art galleries for decades. While his contemporaries applied the "Madras linear impulse" to paper, canvas, or batik, Nandagopal translated this regional line-based design into metal sculpture, creating a bridge between traditional South Indian metalcraft (such as ritualistic idols and Kavadi structures) and Western abstract assemblage. Nandagopal achieved stellar national and international recognition early in his career: he won the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1978 and received the prestigious Gold Medal at the 4th International Triennale India the same year. Arnawaz Vasudev

Arnawaz Vasudev (née Driver; 1945–1988) was a pioneering female painter, draughtswoman, and metal artisan of modern Indian art, renowned for her intricate linear compositions, delicate wash techniques, and mystical visual vocabulary. Born into a Parsi family in Chennai, she pursued her Diploma in Fine Arts at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras, graduating in 1968 under the guidance of K.C.S. Paniker. Driven by an innate spiritual sensibility, Arnawaz developed a distinct aesthetic that harmonized fine ink lines, subtle color washes, and dense graphic patterns. Her work frequently explored themes from Indian epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, alongside natural elements, sacred architecture, and cosmic motifs. Beyond canvas and paper, she excelled in metal craft, creating repoussé metal reliefs on copper and brass sheets—a medium she helped popularize among South Indian modernists. Tragically, her prolific career was cut short when she passed away from cancer in 1988 at the age of 43. As one of the few prominent female artists deeply embedded in the Madras Art Movement, Arnawaz played a vital role in both its artistic developments and community-building efforts. She married fellow artist S.G. Vasudev in 1968, and together they became key early resident-members of the Cholamandal Artists' Village near Chennai. Within the movement, Arnawaz fully embraced the "Madras linear impulse," refining it into a poetic, web-like network of lines that bridged traditional folk iconography with contemporary abstraction. She was also an active craft innovator within the Artists' Handicrafts Association at Cholamandal, contributing significantly to copper relief work and batik craft, proving that fine art and traditional metalwork could merge seamlessly. D. P. Gopinath

P. Gopinath (born 1948) is an acclaimed contemporary Indian modernist known for his masterly use of biomorphic abstraction, radiant sun-drenched palettes, and organic geometric forms. R. B. Bhaskaran

R. B. Bhaskaran (born 1942) is a distinguished contemporary painter, printmaker, and art educator known for his expressive line work, bold contours, and vibrant figurative abstraction. Born in Madras (now Chennai), his early exposure to drawing and color came from working at his uncle’s studio painting cinema banners. He completed his advanced diploma in painting at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras (1960–1966), before expanding his repertoire internationally: studying fresco techniques at Banasthali Vidyapith in Rajasthan, intaglio printmaking and lithography at Ein Hod in Israel under a UNESCO scholarship, and printmaking at Portsmouth Polytechnic in England as a British Council scholar. Bhaskaran is best known for his iconic Cat Series—sketches inspired by a stray cat in his studio that evolved into a central motif synonymous with the artist himself—and his Couple Series, which reimagines middle-class Indian wedding portraits through flattened perspective, textured surfaces, and decorative patternwork. A Ramachandran

A. Ramachandran (1935–2024) was a master Indian modernist painter, sculptor, art educator, and researcher known for integrating traditional Indian classical aesthetics with contemporary visual narrative. Born in Attingal, Kerala, he earned an M.A. in Malayalam literature before training in art at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, under Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij. His early career in the 1960s and 1970s was characterized by expressionist, dark depictions of urban angst and human suffering. However, in the 1980s—partly spurred by political violence and his encounters with the tribal communities and landscapes of Rajasthan—he underwent a dramatic artistic pivot toward vibrant, lyrical, and mythic narratives. He developed a distinctive visual vocabulary drawing from Kerala temple murals and classical miniature traditions, creating monumental canvases and bronze sculptures populated by lotus ponds, folk figures, and spiritual allegories. S. H. Raza,

Sayed Haider Raza (1922–2016), widely known as S. H. Raza, was one of India's most celebrated modern artists. His artistic journey spanned more than seven decades, during which he developed a powerful visual language that brought together modernist abstraction, Indian philosophy, spirituality and memories of the natural landscape. Born on 22 February 1922 in Babaria, Madhya Pradesh, Raza studied at the Nagpur School of Art and later at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai. In 1950, he moved to France, where he continued his artistic education and developed an international career. From Landscape to Abstraction Raza initially became known for expressive landscapes inspired by the forests, villages and landscapes of central India. His early paintings used vibrant colours and energetic brushwork to capture atmosphere and emotion. After moving to France, his style gradually evolved. Influenced by European modernism and abstraction, Raza moved away from direct representation and began exploring colour, geometry, rhythm and spatial relationships. Although his artistic language became increasingly abstract, India remained at the centre of his imagination. The Birth of the Bindu The Bindu became the defining symbol of Raza's mature artistic practice. For Raza, the Bindu was much more than a geometric circle. It represented the point of creation, the seed of existence, energy and the origin of the universe. Through the Bindu, Raza connected modern abstraction with ideas drawn from Indian philosophical and spiritual traditions. His compositions often place the Bindu at the centre, surrounded by geometric structures and fields of intense colour. These paintings invite viewers to experience colour and form not simply as visual elements but as expressions of meditation and cosmic energy. Colour as Emotion and Energy Colour became one of the most important elements of Raza's art. Deep reds, blues, yellows, blacks and greens appear in carefully balanced geometric compositions. Unlike purely decorative abstraction, Raza's use of colour was deeply philosophical. He viewed colour as a source of energy and emotional experience. Arpita Singh (born 1937) is one of India’s most significant modern and contemporary artists, celebrated for her distinctive figurative paintings, drawings and watercolours. Trotsky Marudu (born 1953) is a legendary Indian artist, illustrator, graphic designer, animator, and digital art pioneer renowned for his hyper-dynamic line work, versatile draftsmanship, and pioneering role in digital media across South India. Born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, he was named Trotsky by his father, a dedicated communist thinker. He pursued his passion for visual arts at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras, earning his Diploma in Fine Arts under the guidance of masters like K.C.S. Paniker and L. Munuswamy. B. Prabha

Kavitha Deuskar

Y. G. Srimati

Y. G. Srimati (1926–2007) was a remarkable Indian painter, musician and dancer whose artistic practice brought together Indian classical traditions, mythology, spirituality and modern painting. T.K Padmini

T. K. Padmini (1940–1969) was a pioneer of modern Indian art, recognized as one of the most brilliant female painters of post-independence South India. Born in Kadancheri, a village near Ponnani in Kerala, she initially trained under the renowned illustrator Artist Namboothiri before enrolling at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras, in 1961. Working under the guidance of K.C.S. Paniker, Padmini displayed exceptional prodigy, completing a six-year diploma program in just four years by securing double promotions twice and graduating first in her class in 1965. Her artistic style merged raw emotional intensity with a deeply personal, feminine perspective. Through fluid brushwork, earthy palettes, and expressive figurative forms, her works captured pastoral village scenes, female figures exploring bodily autonomy and longing, and melancholic reflections on human relationships. In 1968, she married fellow Madras artist K. Damodaran. Tragically, her prolific career ended at the age of 29 due to childbirth complications in 1969. Anila Jacob

Anila Jacob (born 1941) is a distinguished Indian sculptor and an important figure of the Madras Art Movement. Born in Kottayam, Kerala, she studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras, where she received her diploma in Fine Arts. Jacob became one of the pioneering women artists of Cholamandal Artists’ Village, where she was among the first women to establish a studio. Her early sculptures explored wood, clay and concrete, while her later practice expanded into welded copper, brass, granite and mixed materials. Her sculptures are characterised by abstracted forms, strong linear qualities and a distinctive sense of movement, often drawing inspiration from Kerala’s nature, traditions, festivals and everyday life. In 1965, Anila Jacob became the first Indian woman sculptor to receive the Lalit Kala Akademi National Award. S. G. Alphonso Arul Doss

Alphonso Arul Doss (1939–2021) was a acclaimed modernist painter and art educator known for his luminous visual style, spiritual themes, and mastery over light, color, and space. Born in Bangalore, he grew up attending church services where the sunlight streaming through stained-glass windows inspired his lifelong fascination with light, refraction, and translucent color. He pursued a Diploma in Fine Art at the Madras Government College of Arts and Crafts, evolving from a classical portrait artist into a pioneer of figurative abstraction. Doss developed a unique "gemstone effect" on canvas, applying wet oil paints loosely with quick, un-erased line work and calculated blank spaces to evoke the sparkling refraction of cut diamonds. Deeply interested in global religions and human spirituality, his work reinterpreted classical motifs into modern idioms—ranging from portraits of Christ and the Buddha to Lord Nataraja and Mahatma Gandhi. K. Damodaran (1934–2020) was a distinguished Indian modernist and abstract painter known for his sensitive treatment of color, texture, and spatial geometry. Born in Thalassery, Kerala, he pursued his art education at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Madras during the 1960s—a transformative era for South Indian modern art. His artistic trajectory spanned over five decades, split into distinct evolutionary phases: early studies of nature and human figures, an interim period of "neo-primitive" imagery, and a final, decades-long immersion into pure abstraction. Deeply reflective and personal, Damodaran used non-representational compositions to explore psychological mindscapes, socio-political commentary, and philosophical themes. Following the tragic early death of his wife—the celebrated painter T.K. Padmini—in 1969, he relocated to New Delhi, where he worked as an educator while continuing his quiet, non-commercial pursuit of pure painterly expression. As a prominent student-member during the mid-20th-century Madras Art Movement, Damodaran trained directly under K.C.S. Paniker. Within the movement's ecosystem, he engaged deeply with Paniker’s philosophy of drawing from indigenous roots while embracing modernist visual language. Unlike contemporaries who focused primarily on linear calligraphy or traditional folk motifs, Damodaran carved out a distinct voice within the movement by translating South Indian textures and landscape sensibilities into non-figurative abstract compositions. His work formed an important bridge between the regional experiments of the Madras school and the broader international abstraction movement. Damodaran's achievements include winning the Madras Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1964 and receiving a Senior Fellowship from the Department of Culture (1983–1985). He held over 50 exhibitions across India, the United States, Japan, Germany, Yugoslavia, and Cuba, earning recognition for his subtle mastery of spatial tension. In recognition of his lasting impact on modern Indian art, he was awarded the Kerala Lalithakala Academy Fellowship in 2006, and his works are preserved in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi.

Chandru Gurusamy (born 1952), popularly known as Chandru, is an acclaimed modern Indian artist, sculptor, art educator, and veteran ceramicist recognized for his expressive terracotta works, bronze sculptures, and dedicated advocacy for public art. Born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, he received his formal artistic training at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, completing his Diploma and Post-Diploma in Painting and Sculpture. Chandru developed a distinct visual language deeply rooted in indigenous materials, natural textures, and traditional South Indian craft forms. He is particularly celebrated for his pioneering work in terracotta and ceramic clay, creating tactile, biomorphic sculptures, relief panels, and figurative studies that integrate folk deities, rural legends, and elemental symbols with modern spatial aesthetics. Parallel to his studio practice, Chandru dedicated decades to art education, serving as a revered professor and eventually retiring as the Principal of the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai.As a prominent second-generation figure of the Madras Art Movement, Chandru played a crucial role in carrying forward its foundational principles into modern sculpture, ceramics, and public art education. Deeply influenced by the philosophy of K.C.S. Paniker and the Cholamandal Artists' Village movement, he focused on bridging fine art with indigenous craft traditions. Chandru adapted the signature "Madras linear impulse" into three-dimensional clay modeling and bronze casting, emphasizing organic line work and raw earth surfaces. Beyond the studio, he expanded the movement's impact into the public domain by organizing community pottery workshops, terracotta camps, and large-scale public installations across South India, ensuring that regional craft heritage remained central to modern art discourse.Chandru’s major achievements include winning the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 1989, along with state awards from the Tamil Nadu Lalit Kala Akademi (1983) and the Tamil Nadu Ovia Nunkalai Kuzhu. He was honored with the Kalaimamani / Kalaichemmal Award by the Government of Tamil Nadu for his outstanding service to visual arts and education. He has represented India at international art forums and sculpture symposiums across Europe and Asia, and served as a key advisor and curator for numerous state cultural projects, including public monument designs and regional art initiatives. His works are preserved in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi, the Lalit Kala Akademi in Chennai, and premier private institutions across India.
