ART X COLOUR

Art is the expression of life. Just as physics describes the physical components of everything and around and chemistry talks about the chemical composition of living and non-things things, art explores life. Back in the 19th century, when the period of renaissance raced through medieval Europe, artists were perceived as skilled artisans rather than creative artists. Art is inspired and instilled by things, great or small. A leaf, a caterpillar, a cloud of rain, a still night, a deep sea, a mighty mountain…you name it, and the mind of an artist draws inspiration from great and small things alike. Like a potter who works with clay and a banker who works with money, an artist works with colors. Shades of light and dark and hues of thick and thin are the bits and pieces of magic that an artist uses to define the aesthetic picture formed in his mind. The design of colors in various planes and angles gives the art a unique visual format of its own. Even when a painting’s narrative symbolism is ambiguous, it is the formal interaction of colors and patterns that is capable of transmitting a particular mood, establishing optical perceptions of space, volume, movement, and light, and generating elements of both symphony and stress. Each color defines a particular connotation, and they pull the strings of a painting together. Red is a rich color of the color palate. Yellow is a subtle, flowy color. Blue is a soothing and tranquil colour. Green is the color of nature. Black is a color of mystery and magic. Terracotta is a modern color. White symbolizes purity. The combination of different colours fabricates a visual treat and they symbolize their connotation in union. After the concept of colours, modern and conventional, invaded the world of art, ‘fine art’ came into existence. Colours define an art and an art manipulates colours.

Art X Architecture

The art and architecture of a country portray the artistic brilliance and the creative exuberance of the creators, artists, and architects. They also represent the culture and tradition of the country. With complex architecture that questions the intelligence of modern engineers and is still in awe the art lovers, Tamilnadu exhibits its rich culture and heritage through its sculptures, monuments, and magnificent buildings.  The ancient Tamilnadu was the abode of many different empires. Pallavas, Pandiyas, Cholas, and Marathas have ruled the land for thousands of years. Their reign comprises their splendid palaces and impressive temples that are at least 800 to 2000 years old. These structural monuments capture the very essence of the architectural swell of those times. The Tamil Illakiyam depicts kings as the supreme powers equivalent to God and these representatives of God lived in temples. The word “koyil” in Tamil literally translates as “House of the King”.  The architectural style of Tamil Nadu is called Dravida Style. A South Indian temple is essentially a square-chambered sanctuary with an associated pillared portico or hall (mandapa, or mandapam) and a peristyle of cells within a rectangular court, topped by a superstructure, tower, or spire. The temple’s outside walls are divided by pilasters and have spaces for sculpture. A dome-shaped cupola with a crowning pot and finial atop the tower.  Historians and archaeologists have been discovering the mysteries and the unique architectural techniques that had been adapted in the construction of these global marvels. There are many unanswered questions lingering in the world of architecture that still pose a terrific challenge to modern engineers. Research is still going to unearth the mysteries and resolve the riddles that these millennial structures boast.

The Single Stroke

The atmosphere was humid and warm. The air around felt tense. The well of inspiration was dry unfortunately. But a painting was waiting to be painted. All that was needed at that intense moment was a single stroke. A stroke that will become the root for a strong, exquisite masterpiece. A stroke that will design a bright, colorful art. A stroke that is simple yet spectacular. Single stroke painting or one stroke paintings are the new, freshly baked pies of the art world. One-stroke painting is a popular and intriguing ornamental painting method that employs double and multi-loading to generate highlights, shadows, and color shifts in a single stroke. To put it another way, it entails loading a brush with two different colors and shading and highlighting in one stroke. It’s a basic method that yields some of the most intriguing results, especially when using multiple colours on the brush. Art novices, enthusiasts and rookies prefer one stroke painting as these are easy to draw. The result is always elegant, distinctive, and brilliant. You can blend, shade, basecoat and highlight in one go and voila an interesting painting emerges from an elementary effort. And to top all these, this form of painting can be done on any medium or fabric – be it wood, canvas, or ceramics. With just two colours on a brush, you can create a wide range of color tones with just one stroke. This does not require any rigorous art practice or a formal training. Just start with a single brush and two colors and you are good to go. It requires some practice to master this art but hey Rome was not built in a day!
